Descrizione : 50th anniversary of first Sputnik. Dogs in space on Sputnik 2 and Vostok spacecraft.

Top left: Laika (Russian: Лайка, "little barker") was a dog from the Soviet space program and the first living being to orbit the Earth. She was launched by the USSR aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft on November 3, 1957, one month after the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1.

Top right: Belka (Белка, literally "squirrel," but as an animal name, derived from the Russian word for "white," белый) and Strelka (Стрелка, "little arrow") spent a day together in space aboard Sputnik 5 on August 19, 1960. They were accompanied by a gray rabbit, forty mice, two rats, flies, and several plants and fungi. All passengers survived and landed safely.

Bottom left: Chernushka (Чернушка, nickname referring to her black color) orbited Sputnik 9 on March 9, 1961, carrying a mannequin of a cosmonaut (nicknamed Ivan Ivanovich), mice, and a guinea pig. The mannequin was ejected from the capsule during atmospheric reentry and landed unharmed by parachute. Chernushka landed safely inside the capsule.

Bottom right: Zvezdochka (Звёздочка, "little star," a name chosen by Yuri Gagarin) flew on Sputnik 10 on March 25, 1961, with a wooden mannequin representing a cosmonaut. This was the last flight before Gagarin’s historic flight on April 12. As with Chernouchka, the mannequin was ejected while the dog remained inside the capsule. She landed unharmed (and the mannequin was recovered).

Pchelka and Mushka, having perished, were apparently never commemorated with a postage stamp.

Pchelka (Пчёлка, "little bee") and Mushka (Мушка, "little fly") spent a day in orbit aboard Sputnik 6 on December 1, 1960. They were also accompanied by "other animals," plants, and insects. Due to a navigational error, their capsule disintegrated during atmospheric reentry on December 2; both perished.
