In 1988, he was part of the ARAGATZ mission. He made a second space flight aboard Soyuz TM-7 (from November 26 to December 21, 1988), after two years of new training in Star City. He participated in the program of experiments of the Franco-Soviet scientific and technical mission ARAGATZ aboard the Mir station. On December 9, 1988, he performed, along with Alexander Volkov, an EVA (extravehicular activity) of nearly six hours (5h57, then a record for the duration of a spacewalk) following a problem during the deployment of a structure. This increase in the duration of the EVA caused a failure of the anti-fog system and the visor of his helmet became covered in fog, preventing him from seeing properly.
