She is part of the third group of astronauts of the European Space Agency (ESA) selected in 2009. She is the third female astronaut of the space agency and the first female astronaut from Italy.
Since Nov. 23, 2014, she has been part of the permanent crew of the International Space Station for a period of six months as part of the Expedition 42 missions.
