EUROPEAN SERVICE MODULE
The service module includes all equipment that is not essential for return to Earth. It contains the main propulsion and associated propellant tanks and consumables (water, oxygen, nitrogen) used by the crew. The solar panels that produce the electrical energy of the vessel as well as the radiators that ensure the removal of excess heat are also housed in the service module. An environmental system controls the temperature of the vehicle and cargo components. He is dropped before returning to Earth. The service module is also equipped with a cargo hold to carry non-pressurized cargo or scientific instruments. The version of the service module used for the first flight is developed by ESA as payment for the stay of European astronauts aboard the International Space Station between 2017 and 2020, NASA has ordered a single copy of this module called European Service Module for the Artemis 1 flight and ordered two more for the Artemis 2 and Artemis 3 flights.
